FDIC ANNOUNCES THREE KEY EXECUTIVE
APPOINTMENTS IN THE DIVISION OF SUPERVISION
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FDIC Division of Supervision (DOS) Director Nicholas J. Ketcha Jr. today announced
the selection of three managers to assume key executive positions in the division's San
Francisco and Chicago regions and at headquarters.
Susan E. Carroll was named Deputy Regional Director for the San Francisco region and
Susan M. Madson was appointed Deputy Regional Director for the Chicago region.
Mark S. Schmidt was named Assistant Director for the DOS Policy Branch at
headquarters.
"Today's appointments reflect our continuing efforts to provide a high caliber DOS
management team to meet the significant challenges that lie ahead in financial
institution supervision," Mr. Ketcha said.
As Deputy Regional Director for the San Francisco region, Ms. Carroll will help oversee
FDIC bank examination/supervision and corporate application programs in the region's
11 western states. Ms. Carroll began her FDIC career in 1986 as a bank examiner in
the DOS Boston region. From 1992 to 1994, she served as Field Office Supervisor of
the Holyoke, Massachusetts, field office. For the past two years she has served as
Assistant to the DOS Director. A native of Simsbury, Connecticut, Ms. Carroll holds a
Bachelor in Business Administration degree from the University of Notre Dame, South
Bend, Indiana.
As Deputy Regional Director for the Chicago region, Ms. Madson will assist in oversight
of bank examination activities and programs in the region's five midwestern states. Ms.
Madson began her career with the FDIC in 1978 as a bank examiner in the former

City region and in 1991, she was promoted to Assistant Regional Director in the
Chicago region, the position she currently holds. A native of Argyle, Wisconsin, Ms.
Madson holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and is also a graduate
of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
In his new position as Assistant Director for the DOS Policy Branch, Mr. Schmidt will be
responsible for planning and development of supervisory policies and programs, and for
accounting issues. He will serve as one of five assistant directors in the division.
Mr. Schmidt began his FDIC career in 1976 as a bank examiner in the former Omaha,
Nebraska, region. From 1985 to 1990, he served as a Review Examiner in the Kansas
City region and since 1990, has served as the region's Assistant Regional Director. He
is currently participating in the 1996 LEGIS Fellows Program sponsored by the
Brookings Institution, where he is serving on a temporary assignment to the staff of the
House Committee on Banking and Financial Services. A native of Everly, Iowa, Mr.
Schmidt is a graduate of the Herbert V. Prochnow Graduate School of Banking,
Madison, Wisconsin, and holds a B.S. in Accounting from Iowa State University, Ames,
Iowa, as well as a Masters in Business Administration degree from the University of
Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri.
Ms. Madson's appointment is effective immediately. Ms. Carroll's appointment will
become effective in August and Mr. Schmidt's appointment will become effective when
he completes his assignment with the Brookings Institution.
